This is truly inspiring. As of last Friday, I am done with community college and will be receiving my A.A. in Secondary Education: English. I will, however, be turning my back on education for a while, thanks to my recent exposure to the way that things really work within the public school system. It disgusts me that education is headed towards a nationwide core curriculum designed to get students through the “necessary” tests while social reconstruction is put on the back burner. This article provides a great look at the way one teacher is using her power to better prepare her students for integration into society as considerate, open minded individuals. By dedicating some time to breaking down issues that may make some of the students uncomfortable, she is removing long term distractions and setting them up for success.
